Day 1: Burg Eltz
Getting to Burg Eltz – How to Arrive and Where to Park
Discovering Burg Eltz – A Fairytale Castle in the Hills
We highly recommend traveling to Burg Eltz by car, as the scenic drives through this region of Germany’s countryside are truly breathtaking.
For parking, we chose the grassy field known as “Wanderparkplatz”. From this lot, you can immediately access a lovely forest trail that leads directly to the castle. This short, scenic hike is about 1.3 km long and takes around 15 minutes at a relaxed pace. It’s a great way to enjoy a peaceful walk through nature before arriving at the castle.
If you prefer to park closer, there’s a paved parking lot further up the hill. Simply enter “56294 Wierschem” into your GPS or phone, and follow the route signs. From this upper lot, you’ll find a shorter, paved path to the castle—perfect for families, especially those with strollers or mobility concerns. This route is approximately 800 meters long and takes about 10 minutes on foot. You can either walk or take the shuttle bus provided for added convenience.
Begin your journey with a visit to Burg Eltz, one of Germany’s most iconic and best-preserved medieval castles. Nestled in the forested hills near the town of Wierschem, this stunning fortress sits above the Mosel River, creating a picture-perfect scene straight out of a storybook. The castle lies between the Moselle and Eiffel regions, making it a scenic and historically rich first stop.
In Burg Eltz, you can take a guided tour through its furnished rooms and armory collections. If you wish to enter the castle, admission tickets are available at the entrance. As of 2025, the ticket prices are as follows: adults: €14.00, children under 6: free. The castle is open daily from 9:30 AM to 6:15 PM, typically from April 1st to November 1st.
Afterwards, make sure to enjoy a peaceful hike through the surrounding forest trails.
One of our favorite moments was catching a view of the castle during golden hour—it truly felt like stepping into a fairytale. (See photo above!) The light, the landscape, and the setting created a picture-perfect scene we’ll never forget.

If you’re wondering how to reach this lookout, here’s a simple guide with reference to our own experience and photos:
- When you’re standing in front of the castle, head to the left side and follow the stairs down to the river.
- Cross the bridge over the river and continue on the trail for about 10 minutes until you reach a T-junction.
- At the junction, turn right—this section is a bit steep, so be prepared for an uphill hike.
- Shortly after, turn right again, and you’ll arrive at the lookout point with a breathtaking view of Burg Eltz.
If you’re up for a longer adventure, we highly recommend the Traumpfad Eltzer Burgpanorama trail. This scenic hiking route is about 12.6 km long, rated at a moderate difficulty level, and takes approximately 4 hours to complete. It winds through lush forests and along the Moselle River, offering panoramic views of the landscape and castle along the way—perfect for anyone looking to fully immerse themselves in the Germany countryside.

Day 2: Todtnau
After a scenic 4.5-hour drive through the enchanting landscapes of the Black Forest, we arrived in the charming town of Todtnau. The journey itself was a highlight, showcasing the picturesque countryside and charming villages.
Hasenhorn Coaster
The main attraction in Todtnau is the Hasenhorn Coaster, renowned as Germany’s most spectacular alpine coaster. Spanning 2.9 kilometers, this exhilarating ride offers sharp bends, waves, and 360° spins, all while you control the speed, making it a must-add to your Germany bucket list.
The Hasenhorn Coaster operates daily from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM. It’s advisable to arrive early, especially during weekends and holidays, to avoid longer wait times.

Just a short 15-minute drive from Todtnau lies the well-known mountain town of Feldberg. While it’s a favorite winter destination for skiing enthusiasts, Feldberg transforms into a beautiful area for hiking and exploring during the summer months—offering a different yet equally charming Germany travel experience.
During our stay, we booked a room at Gästehaus Behabühl B&B, and we were genuinely pleased with our experience. A great bonus when staying here (or at many other participating accommodations in the region) is that guests staying at least two nights receive a special guest card. This card gives you free access to public buses and attractive discounts on various local attractions and activities.
If you’re looking for a great place to eat in Feldberg, we highly recommend EXPRESSO Restaurant & Winebistro. This cozy bistro quickly became our favorite during our stay. If you’re not sure what to order, here are a few of our top picks: Feine Nudeln mit Pfifferlingen, Schnitzel mit Rösti and Flammkuchen.
Day 3: Feldberg
Exploring the Majestic Feldberg and Feldsee
On our third day, we set out to conquer the Feldberg, standing tall at 1,493 meters, making it the highest peak in the Black Forest and the tallest mountain in Germany outside the Alps . Utilizing the complimentary KONUS guest card provided by our accommodation, we conveniently boarded the Feldbergbus (Line 7300), which operates year-round and connects various towns to the Feldberg area. For those preferring to drive, parking is available at the Parkhaus Feldberg.
When we reached the top of Feldberg, we were treated to amazing views—rolling hills, forests, and distant mountain peaks as far as the eye could see. There are several hiking trails up here, like the Feldberg-Steig, which offer different routes depending on how much time or energy you have.
One of the absolute highlights of our hike was making our way down to Feldsee, a peaceful glacial lake tucked away deep in the forest. The trail from the top of Feldberg down to the lake is about 3 kilometers long and takes roughly an hour, depending on your pace. But trust us—every step is worth it. As you walk, the path winds through thick, almost magical woodlands that honestly gave us serious Jurassic Park vibes. Be aware, swimming in the Feldsee is prohibited to preserve its delicate ecosystem . We took a leisurely stroll around the lake, soaking in the calm surroundings.
Insider tip:
The trail can be a bit uneven and slippery in places, so make sure to wear proper hiking shoes. It’s a little adventure, but one you’ll remember!
Badeparadies Schwarzwald
On our third evening, we treated ourselves to a visit to Badeparadies Schwarzwald in Titisee-Neustadt—a true oasis nestled in the heart of the Black Forest. Thanks to the Hochschwarzwald Card provided by our accommodation, we enjoyed 1.5 hours of free admission to the Palm Oasis and Galaxy Schwarzwald areas. Please note that on weekends and public holidays, a €3 surcharge applies. We highly recommend booking your tickets online in advance to secure your spot, especially during peak times . Whether you’re looking to relax or have some fun, Badeparadies Schwarzwald offers an unforgettable experience in the Black Forest.
Day 4: Titisee-Neustadt
On our final day, we made a short 15-minute drive from Feldberg to the charming lakeside town of Titisee-Neustadt. Here, we rented a pedal boat to explore the beautiful waters of Lake Titisee. While specific rental prices can vary, it’s best to check with local providers for the most up-to-date rates. After our boating adventure, we strolled along the lake promenade, discovering several bistros and restaurants offering delightful views over the water. Enjoying a meal here was the perfect way to end our trip before heading back home.
