But first, what makes Khao Sok National Park so unique?
What makes Khao Sok National Park truly unique is its incredible biodiversity and ancient ecosystem. This park is estimated to be over 160 million years old, making it one of the world’s oldest rainforests—older than the Amazon.
It’s home to a wide range of wildlife, though many species are elusive due to the dense jungle. Visitors have a higher chance of spotting animals like long-tailed macaques, dusky langurs, monitor lizards, hornbills, and various colorful butterflies and frogs. While wild elephants, gaurs, and Malayan tapirs do live in the park, they are much harder to spot in the wild.
The forest is also one of the few places in the world where the Rafflesia kerrii, the world’s largest flower, can be found—though it blooms only for a few days each year. With its dramatic limestone cliffs, misty jungle trails, and the serene Cheow Lan Lake, Khao Sok offers an unforgettable experience in Thailand.

Practical Tips for Visiting Khao Sok National Park
Make the most of your adventure in Khao Sok National Park with these helpful travel tips:
Book in Advance During High Season – Khao Sok is growing in popularity, especially between December and March, so it’s smart to book your accommodation and tours early to avoid missing out—especially floating bungalows on Cheow Lan Lake.
Bring a Power Bank – Power can be limited or unavailable in floating bungalows, so bring a charged power bank to keep your phone and camera going during overnight lake trips.
Dry Bag – Essential for keeping your electronics and valuables safe while kayaking or boating. With the chance of rain or splash from the lake, a dry bag is a great investment.
Mosquito Repellent – The jungle and lakeside areas can be full of mosquitoes, particularly in the early morning and at dusk. Natural or DEET-based repellents work best.
Rain Gear – A light rain jacket or poncho is a must, even outside the rainy season. Tropical rain can appear out of nowhere!
Sturdy Footwear – Jungle trails can be muddy, slippery, or uneven, so pack good sneakers or hiking shoes for comfort and safety.
Leech Protection – If you’re hiking during or after rain, wear long socks and trousers. Leech bites are harmless but not pleasant. Some guides carry tobacco or salt for easy removal.
Luggage Storage – If you’re heading out on a multi-day tour, most accommodations in Khao Sok village offer free luggage storage, so you can travel light to the lake.
