Foolproof packing tips- How to pack?

The way of transportation changes everything
When my partner and I book a trip, the mode of transportation plays a key role in determining how much we can pack. For instance, if we’re flying, I tend to fill our carry-ons a bit more, since most airlines only weigh checked bags.
It’s important to always research the airline you’re flying with to check the weight limit for checked luggage. Once I know the limit, I pack my suitcase and weigh it with a handheld luggage scale, a tool I swear by. It has saved me from many last-minute hassles at the airport. I also make sure to keep my suitcase a few pounds under the limit, leaving room for souvenirs or other items I might bring back from the trip.
When we travel by car and don’t have to worry about flight regulations, we have much more flexibility in how we pack and what we bring along.

What kind of suitcase should you bring
No matter where you’re headed, picking the right suitcase can really make your trip easier. Just think about how long you’ll be traveling, how you’re getting there, and how much you want to bring back. With the right bag, you’ll be all set for a smooth, stress-free adventure! This overview below can help you pick out the right travel bag for your trip.

For Short Trips (1-3 Days):
For short trips, a carry-on suitcase is your best option. I recommend going with a lightweight, hard-shell carry-on with four spinner wheels, as they’re easy to maneuver through airports and hotels. Just be sure it meets your airline’s size limits. Personally, we love Samsonite suitcases for their durability and design. However, if you’ll be doing a lot of walking on uneven terrain, you might want to opt for a travel backpack instead, so you’re not dragging a suitcase along with you.
For Long Getaways (4-7 Days):
For longer trips, a medium-sized suitcase (around 24-26 inches) offers more space without being overly cumbersome. Look for one with multiple compartments for organized packing, and consider expandable options for added flexibility, especially if you plan to shop or bring back souvenirs.
For Extended Travel (8+ Days):
When you’re going on a longer adventure, you’ll need a larger suitcase—28 inches/ 70 cm or more. While these can handle everything you need, it’s important to check your airline’s weight restrictions to avoid extra fees. Look for durable materials and sturdy zippers. We always make sure we have an extra lock with us as well to lock up the suitcase.
For Road Trips:
When traveling by car, soft-sided suitcases or duffel bags can be more practical since they’re easier to squeeze into tight spaces. You won’t have to worry about weight or size limits, so it allows you alot more packing space and freedom to bring along what you want. Collapsible bags also make for easy storage when not in use.
For International Travel:
International trips often involve multiple stops, different climates, and varied activities. In this case, a versatile suitcase with durable construction is key. We also pack an additional backpack in the suitcase that we can use during our day trips.
If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, consider bringing only a large travel backpack and leaving the suitcase at home. It truly depends on where you are going and what your preference is.
Insider tip
When traveling internationally, remember to bring a travel adapter that matches the plug type and voltage used in your destination. Voltage varies by country and can affect your device’s safety and performance.

Packing cubes
Find the exact packing cubes that we use!
If you have not tried packing with packing cubes yet, this is your moment. Since I have been using these, this has been a life changer in the way I pack.

I always begin with a comprehensive checklist of potential items, which you can download here. From there, I cross off anything that doesn’t apply to my specific trip. Next, I gather everything in a laundry basket before packing my suitcase. This is when I start planning outfits, focusing on versatile clothing pieces that can be mixed and matched to create multiple looks. If you’re unsure about an item and find yourself second-guessing its usefulness, it’s best to leave it behind. If you truly need it, chances are you can purchase it at your destination.
